Minna’s January Book of the Month Club is wrapping up for the month, which means it’s time to discuss! Here were our discussion questions for this wonderful book about Martin Luther King Jr. and some of the thoughts we had.

  1. Do you think this speech is still important today? Why?

This speech is very important today! Martin Luther King Jr. spent much of his life fighting for Civil Rights. Without his peaceful protests and dream for America, our country would still be struggling with segregation and unfair treatment to African Americans. Are these things still alive today? Yes, which is why it is important for all of us to remember Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech and try to live by those principles today. Why did Martin Luther King Jr. give this speech?

Do you have a favorite line from the speech? Why?

2. If you were to write your own “I Have a Dream” speech, what would you put in your speech?

If I were to write my own “I Have a Dream” speech today, I would focus on very similar concepts from Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, too. In recent weeks, our nation has seen extreme hatred toward people who disagree with one another and we have seen the media take control over our freedom of speech. This is called censoring and I believe it is something that someone like Martin Luther King Jr. would not agree with. Our country needs to remember that we are a nation that encourages freedom of speech and a difference of opinion, so my I Have a Dream speech would focus on remembering that it is okay to have differing views, and we can still be kind to one another.

3. Do you have a favorite line from the speech?

My favorite line from the speech is “This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning: My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims’ pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.” I love this part because it reminds us that we are all God’s children living in this wonderful country. We all need to be treated equally.
