This week on Minna and the Canine Club’s Teaching Tip Tuesday, we are once again looking at reading strategies!
Visualizing while reading is so important! This means that as children read their books, they can “make a movie” in their mind using the words they read. Children that are not visualizing the story are usually not understanding or comprehending what is happening in the book.
One fun activity to do is to read a poem or a picture book aloud to your child, but not show them any pictures. Stop part way, and have them draw as detailed of a picture as they can about what they were just read aloud.
Here are some of our favorite books to use to teach visualizing:
-Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
-Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
-The Storm Book by Charlotte Zolotow
-Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
-Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
